On the first of January 2012 I started a project called 'I want to make the world a better place'. The idea was simple: let people suggest ideas on how I could improve the world, let them vote on all the ideas, and then each month I would execute the most popular idea. For one year, 12 months, 12 different ideas.
For a long time already I'd been wanting to contribute positively to the world but didn't know where to start. There seemed to be so many issues that needed help making it impossible for me to choose which one was more important to me. So I did nothing. Which was frustrating...
My solution? Let other people choose!! And trust the wisdom of the crowd.
What did I do?
Some ideas were focussed around my own life, like living without producing garbage, living without electricity, living vegan for a month.
Other ideas were more focussed on issues outside my personal life, like helping people who are unemployed, finding out how my clothes are produced and visiting the factory and improve the city every day with small actions.
It was an intense year in which I got to know so many amazing people. And I learned many lessons, for instance that:
You've got to do it yourself, but you don't need to do it alone.
Because one of the amazing things which happened is that as soon as I started to communicate my intention to help others and the world, people joined in. Not because of me, but because everybody has a wish to help the world. We just do it in different ways and within our own capacity.
